WHO WAS HYPATIA?
Hypatia of Alexandria was a fourth- and fifth-century Neoplatonist philosopher, mathematician, and astronomer who never separated thinking from building. She became famous for making hard ideas clear, and for drawing students of every faith, even as the classical world fractured around her. As her name passed into legend, she was claimed by feminists, atheists, Victorians, and Catholics alike. While her full story remains a mystery, her legacy is one of wisdom remaining open to all, and of a steady light in an uncertain age.
